Straight from Korea’s rich culinary heritage, Gwangjang GAON has landed in Singapore, its first overseas outpost, at Jewel Changi Airport.  Founded by Korean culinary professor Hyo Soon Park, this restaurant is known for its classic, time-honoured recipes.

The standout for us was the GAON Galbi ($69.90) – a stunning beef short rib, cooked sous-vide for over 24 hours.  The result?  Tender, deeply infused meat with a subtle char from a final torching.  It’s served on a royal Hojokban tray, and truly fit for a king (or at least someone who eats like one).  This was hands-down my favourite dish of the meal.

For something refreshingly different, try the Deulgireum Makguksu ($21.90): cold buckwheat noodles tossed in nutty perilla oil, topped with crunchy perilla seeds and a hint of Cheongyang pepper. Light, earthy, and surprisingly addictive.

Don’t skip the Modm-Jeon ($29.90), a gorgeous platter of golden pan-fried bites including shrimp, pollack, zucchini, ground pork, and crab surimi. Crisp on the outside, soft inside, and perfect with the tangy soy-vinegar dip. These jeon are made daily from Professor Park’s family recipes dating back to the Joseon Dynasty.

The Classic Bibimbap ($22.90) is another staple on most tables. A colourful medley of over 13 ingredients layered over rice, with your choice of red pepper paste, soybean paste, or a balanced mix of both. Hearty, vibrant, and comforting.

Set against Jewel’s lush indoor garden, Gwangjang GAON offers a warm, relaxed setting; perfect for travellers and locals alike. Whether you’re arriving, departing, or simply craving an authentic Korean meal, this is a stop worth making.
