Good Chai People | Singapore’s 1st Chai Speciality Cafe
Good Chai People is Singapore’s 1st chai cafe – as its name suggests, the focus is on handmade artisanal chai. Tucked along the rows of shops along East Coast Road, Good Chai People is a 60-seater cafe opened by Darren Wee, a Radio DJ with Power 98FM.
GCP’s take on sticky chai latte pays homage to the drink’s Indian heritage but leans towards the Australian style of preparation, complete with oat milk and coconut sugar. We were told that the spice mix includes star anise, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon and ginger. Very comforting for the belly.
GCP has a food menu to complement the chai and coffee selections offered. We had this Yuzu Salmon Open-Faced Toast ($20) which was beautifully plated. There is a mix of yuzu-marinated Norwegian salmon and smoked salmon atop toasted sourdough and garnished with dill and lemon cream cheese.
Our preferred brunch item is the 24-Hr Beef Brisket ($20). As the name suggests, the beef brisket is braised for 24hours, served with confit baby potatoes and two poached eggs. The beef brisket is well-seasoned and the toasted sourdough mops up the mixture of the egg yolk and the sauce from beef brisket.
For something sweet, the French Toast Lovin’ ($20) is GCP’s signature dish, and it is not wonder why! It is a treat for the eyes.
Apart from the toasts, we also tried the Prawn Chorizo Aglio Olio ($22). The tiger prawns are fairly huge and the spice level manageable. However, this dish was underseasoned on the day we visited. We did inform the staff so hopefully it is a one-off incident.
Whipped cream cheese and homemade berries compote are layered between thick brioche french toast and finished with maple thyme drizzle. The peanut butter adds indulgence to the dish. We recommend sharing this dish though as the portion is quite substantial. Consider checking out GCP the next time you’re in the area. Budget per person: $20 to $30 per person
