The newly launched Hawkers’ Street in the heart of town (ION orchard) houses six carefully curated famed hawkers in one place.  King of Fried Rice requires no introduction despite being a relatively new player in the hawker scene, having opened just in 2018.  The snaking queues at its other branches are testament to its popularity and it is no wonder given the signature egg fried rice with beautifully grilled pork chop ($6.90) served with homemade chilli oil.

Another crowd-favourite is Nam Sing Hokkien Mee (from $6) that boasts long waiting hours at its original Old Airport Road Food Centre stall.  Nam Sing is known for using thin bee hoon alongside classic yellow noodles to allow for the soaking up of the rich seafood stock.  The hokkien mee is also served with red cut chilli instead of the sambal sort that you get at most stalls in order to preserve the original taste of the dish.

The last main that we tried was the Beach Road Scissors-Cut Curry Rice, a long-standing supper spot well-loved for its braised pork belly and crispy pork chop characteristically cut up with scissors (hence its moniker).  The highlight of the dish is undoubtedly its curry gravy and braised pork sauce that is poured over white rice accompanied with fried egg and cabbage.  Comfort food, as some may say.

What stood out to us were the Ann Chin Popiah ($2.50/roll) and Jian Bo Shui Kueh ($3.20).  Both have healthier versions at Hawkers’ Street – the former is made without lard and pork and the latter swapped out pork lard for vegetable oil.  Dig into the soft aromatic shui kueh topped with addictive chye poh (pickled radishes) and chilli infused with dried shrimp.

This eatery can seat up to 92 and was bustling with activity when we visited on a weekday.  Do note that you have to be fully vaccinated to dine in!
