Da Paolo Gastronomia 01
Fast forward 21 years since Da Paolo Gastronomia opened its first outlet in Chip Bee Gardens, they are back with their eighth and latest addition to the Gastronomia concept in Great World City!  Over the years, Gastronomia has progressed from takeaway to a café-deli with full dining service and a retail section.  Launched in July 2021, Da Paolo Gastronomia Great World is designed to be a one-stop destination.

The aesthetics of the place evoke Tuscany, a region in Italy with beautiful landscapes, exquisite wine and delectable cuisine.  At the retail section, you can stock up on Da Paolo’s preservative-free products made from scratch, including handmade pastas, fresh pasta sauces, meal prep essentials and ready meals.  There are also boutique and artisanal brands from Italy and other parts of Europe that are carefully curated by the family.

We were most excited to have our brunch at Da Paolo Gastronomia Great World on a weekend.  The first thing that we tried was the Double Baked Almond Croissant ($4.90) available all day from the Bakery Section.  If you’re dining in, you can request for the staff to have this heated up.  The almond filling is very fragrant.

We also had the Scrambled Eggs on Toast ($11).  The scrambled eggs are beaten with full cream milk and cooked at a low temperature with constant stirring.  They are then placed atop buttered butter brioche sourdough toast and finished with grated parmigiano reggiano, finely chopped chives and finished with pepper.  It is delightfully buttery – hey no one is complaining – and I only wished that the portion was slightly bigger because it left me wanting more.

As a side, we had Da Paolo’s Signature Beef Meatballs ($14).  Made of Australian beef (80:20 meat to fat ratio), parmesan, milk, house-made fine breadcrumbs, eggs, fresh rosemary, thyme and sage, these balls are served in a tomato based sauce and parmesan cheese powder.  They also have an impossible plant-based version available at $16.

From their Pasta Bar concept, we had the Seafood Spaghetti Cartoccio ($29) and Spaghettone Carbonara Calabrese ($25).  The former features a whole lot of seafood – slipper lobster, scallops, squid, mussels, lobster bisque.  To create the seafood base, carrots, onion, celery, roasted crayfish shell and tomato sauce are boiled together for six to eight hours.  The blistered cherry tomatoes also create the additional umami and sweetness to this dish.

I usually don’t take cream-based pastas much.  But this Spaghettone Carbonara Calabrese caught my attention with the addition of nduja paste.  We were told that nduja paste and oil are first added to a heated pan.  The pan is then removed from heat and cooked pasta added to be tossed with the sauce and finished with parmesan cheese powder before being topped with grated pecorino.  We would recommend that you share this dish with your fellow dining partners so that it doesn’t get too heavy.

We rounded up our hearty brunch this Rucola e Crudo ($28) – Pizza topped with 24-month aged parma ham, mozzarella and locally grown rocket leaves then drizzled with extra virgin olive oil.  The parma ham used is also available on retail from the Deli counter.  We saw many people ordering this pizza to-go when we were dining in.

How can we leave Da Paolo Gastronomia without having their house-churned gelato?  One will definitely be greeted and inevitably be enticed by these colourful gelatos when passing by any of their outlets.  This time, we tried a couple of their popular flavours: Hazelnut, Coffee, Dark Chocolate, Pistachio and Lemon Sorbet.  We were told that these gelatos are made in collaboration with Chocolat Milano, a 60-year old artisanal gelato brand.

We can’t wait to be back in this beautiful space, perhaps for dinner next.  Da Paolo has created something eminently deserving of a neighbourhood’s loyalty and affection, a place of welcome and comfort where there is something for everyone – anytime of the day.
