Media Tasting at Yassin Kampung
With 4 outlets (Marsiling, Clementi, Admiralty and Bedok) across the island, Yassin Kampung has recently dished out its first-ever series of Mala dishes that would sear tongues and numb those taste buds.
The restaurant is MUIS Halal-certified and the founder/ head chef, Mr. Muhammad Yassin Ng has over 15 years of experience serving Halal Tze Char.
Immerse yourself back in time as you experience the kampung spirit kampung while being in a restaurant of village setting as you savour some of Chef’s modern mala creations and other unique dishes.
Starting off with the 2 crustacean dishes, despite the menacing look from tons of dried chillies and peppercorns being showered over them, both the Sichuan Ma La Fried Crab and Sichuan Ma La Crispy Prawns were rather popular. Let the spice and numbness begin.
Although the Sichuan Mala Fragrant Fish might look mild without the presence of fiery red chillies, you would not expect the heat to hit you hard as the savoury ma la gravy would never show mercy. It definitely went rather well with the fresh fish.
The next mala dish that got me addicted even though I had low spice tolerance would be the Sichuan Mala Diced Chicken. Bite-size, tender, fried till crispy and fragrant with dried chillies and peppercorn. Besides the mala dishes, they do serve other popular dishes such as the BBQ Sambal Stingray, non-spicy dishes such as satays, mutton soup and much more.
Last but not least, one of the highlights that night was actually the Asia’s very first Kampung Durian Chicken! Yes, the love it or hate it durian fruit has found its way into a savoury dish at Yassin Kampung. Tender fried chicken drenched with creamy durian sauce similar in texture to buttermilk or condense milk chicken. The durian smell was mild, sweet and might feel confusing at first bite since the chicken was savoury. Before long, it became a dish which I start to appreciate with rice.
Desserts and drinks might not be their highlight but they sure do have an extensive selection of shaved ice desserts such as Ice Kachang, Chendol and more. Definitely refreshing and useful for putting out the heat of the mala dishes.
