Media Tasting at Tom’s Palette
Previously housed at Shaw Towers, this homegrown gelateria has found a new home along Middle Road, just a stone throw away from its previous location.
Opened since July, Tom’s Palette puts a local spin on the usual ice-cream flavours.
We visited on a rainy day and were served with these comforting pots of tea. There are 4 flavours available: Darjeeling, Furano’s Summer, Golden Peony and Tie Guan Yin; which are priced affordably at S$4.50 per pot! There are coffee options for those who need their coffee fix.
The anniversary specials on the weekend we visited were: Mango Sticky Rice, Melt & Sizzle and Tau Sir Piah. My favourite was the Tau Sir Piah, which is mung bean paste gelato with flaky pastry – yes, pastry bits can be found inside the ice-cream – a delightful combination of savoury and sweet flavours.
A new item on their menu, the Teaffogato, features a scoop of gelato (of your choice), a brown sugar blondie and cold brewed tea. The cold brewed tea of the day was Darjeeling and we were recommended to pair it with yuzu gelato. It turned out to be a refreshing option that was light on the palette. This was an interesting idea, but whilst they taste delicious individually, the flavours could not quite meld with one another when combined.
A sister option to the Teaffogato is the Ondeh Ondeh Affogato. Coconut gelato is paired with pandan soft serve, gula melaka sauce, white pearls and a shot of espresso. The gula melaka sauce is served on the side so you can adjust the sweetness level to your preference. However, as the pandan is freshly blended, it retains a slightly grassy aftertaste so we do not recommend going easy on the gula melaka. The white pearls gave it the chewy texture one would be familiar with in ondeh ondeh.
The best new addition to the menu has got to be these parfaits! Served in two flavours – Summer citrus and caramel apple. The latter consists of yuzu gelato, raspberry coulis, citrus shortbread, blueberries and white pearls. The caramel apple is reminiscent of a deconstructed apple pie – salted caramel cheesecake gelato, biscotti bits, caramel sauce, citrus shortbread and apple pie filling.
And of course, what’s a visit to an ice-cream place without trying their waffles? Tom’s Palette serves a mean waffle – crispy on the outside and warm doughy centres. I paired it with a scoop of White Chocolate Nori. The accompanying raspberry jam is an excellent pairing with the waffles too!
Tom’s Palette is a gem along Middle Road and we can’t wait to make a return visit to try out more flavours!
