YÀN is a place that we know we can trust with Cantonese food, somewhere I will not hesitate to bring my older relatives / family members to.  In the Year of the Snake, YÀN has six specially curated dine-in set menus (ranging from $138++ to $288++ per person) along with a variety of à la carte dishes and festive treats. We had a sneak peak into some of the dishes on their menu.

yan cny 2024 yusheng
Starting with the Kaleidoscope of Prosperity Yu Sheng in “Shun De” Style with Yellowtail Slices and Sakura Shrimps (from $128++).  The Yu Sheng is the savoury sort – a mountain of fried vermicelli drizzled with peanut oil, crowned with shredded purple and yellow sweet potatoes, crispy shredded convoy and gold flakes finished with a savoury dressing of low-sodium soy sauce.

Slices of tender yellowtail are able to shine amidst the crispy vermicelli.  This Yu Sheng is a refreshing change from the usual sweeter yu sheng.
yan cny 2024 soup
The Braised Chicken and Pumpkin Broth with Fish Maw and Conpoy is a must-have at every table.  You know the Cantonese restaurants take pride in their soups and YÀN most definitely delivers a comforting bowl.  The rich, golden stew is simmered for five hours, melding the flavours of minced golden pumpkin, mature hen, chicken feet and more.  A generous service of tender fish maw is added to complete this warming dish.  So so good.
yan cny 2024 scallops
The Sautéed Australia Scallops with Asparagus and Black Truffle Sauce is another dish that stood out for me.  Each scallop is lightly flavoured with earthy black truffle paste and accompanied by slices of sweet capsicum and asparagus to give the dish a pop of colour.

Did you know that people eat scallops during lunar new year because they are said to resemble Chinese coins?  So the belief is that eating scallops brings prosperity.  Its circular shape also symbolises togetherness.
yan cny 2024 soon hock
The Steamed Soon Hock Fillet symbolises 年年有余.  The fish is deboned and filleted, then artfully arranged with layers of Yunnan ham, carrots, shiitake mushrooms and Shanghai greens in the centre.
yan cny 2024 chicken
The Poached Kampong Chicken with Chinese Wine and Conpoy is another staple on the table for such dinners.  The yellow hue is obtained by infusing a blend of Chinese wine, hairy figs and conpoy.
yan cny 2024 abalone noodles
I love that we had noodles as our carbs!  The Braised South African Whole Abalone with Noodles looked like an ordinary dish but the oyster-based sauce complemented the springy noodles well.  The shape of the abalone is reminiscent of gold ingots to represent abundance and is braised in a rich stock for flavour.
yan cny 2024 flower jelly
For a sweet end to joyful reunions, the Chilled Roselle Flower Jelly with Barley offers something light and refreshing.
yan cny 2024 deep fried sesame balls
My pick would be the deep-fried sesame balls with pandan lotus seed paste and melon seeds.  Coated with black and white sesame seeds, the chewy mocha-like balls are stuffed with fragrant pandan-infused lotus seed paste.

The set meals are available from 6 January 2025 onwards and bookings are recommended.
