I stopped by Kai Duck at Ngee Ann City recently with the intention of trying their dim sum, but the dish that stuck with me most wasn’t dim sum at all. It was their Wok fried Claypot Crab Tang Hoon with Luffa.

At first glance it looks like a familiar crab and tang hoon claypot, but the wok hei comes through the moment the lid is lifted. The crab was fresh and sweet, the kind that doesn’t need much help, and the tang hoon picked up the savoury stock without turning soggy.

The luffa added a gentle softness that kept the dish from feeling heavy. It is a sizeable claypot, definitely something to share, and it’s the sort of dish that gets better as you linger.

For something lighter, the Sliced Peking Duck with Crackers offers an interesting change from the usual pancakes. The corn crackers are crisp and airy, and they give the duck a different texture.

The duck skin stays crunchy, and the meat stays warm and tender, so it works even though it is a departure from the traditional wrapping.

Since the weekday lunch dim sum was going at 30% off, I ordered a small spread. The Baked Pastry with Chinese Ham and Scallion had a flaky shell that broke apart easily, revealing the savoury Jin Hua ham.

It is a simple combination but done with care.

The Deep Fried Yams and Pumpkin came in neat, golden stacks. The yam gives a bit of bite, the pumpkin a natural sweetness, and together they make a satisfying snack.

The Pan Fried Siew Mai with Teriyaki Sauce leaned slightly sweeter because of the glaze, though the filling stayed firm and well seasoned. There are plenty of dim sum options on the menu, and most of the dishes feel familiar without being repetitive.

Between the claypot crab, the duck and the dim sum, the meal felt balanced and unhurried. Kai Duck clearly knows that many diners come for the Peking duck, but the newer dishes show that the kitchen is still pushing itself. If you are in Orchard Road during weekday lunch, the dim sum promotion is a good excuse to drop by, and if you have room, the crab claypot is worth sharing around the table.
