In my recent staycation at Grand Mercure Roxy Hotel, has allowed me to explore the cultural vicinity of Katong and also places which I have yet to explore.
Explore Peranakan culture as you walk around well-preserved Peranakan shophouses, Rumah bebe, colonial bungalows and hotel with Peranakan inspired architecture. There are several neighbourhood shopping malls in Katong. Find out if your favourites malls are on this list! Parkway Parade, i12 Katong, Katong Shopping Centre etc. In this enchanting corner of eastern Singapore at Katong, it is convenient to explore around Marine Parade and East Coast Park.
With the upcoming Marine Parade MRT Station (Thomson-East Coast Line), travelling is made easy. If you’re a local who’s never had the time to sight-see in Singapore, Katong is located ideally for visiting places like Marina Bay, Gardens by the Bay, Singapore Flyer, or simply head out to Suntec City, Orchard Road and VivoCity for some shopping. And also to business travellers can easily convene in Suntec Convention Centre (exhibition and convention centre).
2. East Coast Park
The well-loved East Coast Park offers a myriad of recreational activities for your family and friends. From a breeze walk of 15km beach to recreational activities like Golf Driving Range, Roller Blading, Bikes, BBQ Pits, Tennis Complex, Water Sports Centre, Restaurants and Pubs. East Coast Park is incomplete without visiting East Coast Food Centre for supper!
3. East Coast Food Centre
East Coast Food Centre is one of my favourite places to have hearty local supper with friends and family. It’ a place where you can feast on Singapore local food like hokkien mee, fried kuey teow, satay and bbq chicken wings and enjoy the sea breeze.
4. Grand Mercure Roxy Hotel
Upon entering the Business Suite, happily surprised how spacious the room is. The Business Suite has spacious living and bedroom areas in natural wood design. Classically furnished Business Suite with king-sized bed, TV, sofa corner, work table, mini fridge and wardrobe. It would be great if you want to have family or friends gathering in the afternoon.
We were greeted by friendly staff shortly with the welcome snacks and drinks. Pssst, their welcome chocolate tasted great!
The executive work desk is huge and comes with in-room Internet access. I can reply to email or work efficiently with the fast speed internet. Having many electronics and gadgets, I think it would be best if there are more charging stations at the work desk.
What happens when you leave the hotel room? Fret not! Enjoy complimentary usage of Handy smartphone with unlimited International calls to 10 countries and mobile data. Besides the handy phone, guests are also entitled for complimentary daily shuttle services to and from Singapore Changi Airport, and a shuttle service to Orchard Road.
The bathroom is gorgeous, with marbled details and a rain and hand shower, and a tub that you never ever want to leave. Especially when there’s a television with Korean drama and variety shows. What if you forget to pack something for your staycation? Standard toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothbrush, toothpaste are available. So, not to worry if you forget to bring any.
In the Business Suite, you also get to oversee the outdoor swimming pool. Or visit 24 hours gym, anytime at your convenience.
Do you know that you can dine by the pool at Breez Bistro Bar at Level 4 and enjoy the great ambience. The set dinner menu features some of the chef’s specialities from S$42++ per pax.
Warm your tummy with these appetisers; Mushroom Soup, Homemade Pita Bread and Caesar Salad. The mushroom looked like any other mushroom soup, but turned out to taste pretty good! It is cooked using three types of mushrooms like portobello and shiitake. Pita bread is warm, soft, so chewy and the flavour is just right with olive and spices dipping. A refreshing blend of caesar salad and baked tuna. I would personally like baked tuna to be pink in the middle and seared on the outside.
The salmon is grilled to tender and flaky perfection, without any fishy taste. It is accompanied with mash potatoes, season vegetables and fries. It would be perfect if the salmon skin is very crispy.
The satisfying and tender cajun spring chicken with its jus. It is my favourite dish for the night. The spring chicken has a spicy kick to it but not as hot or spicy like chilli. Instead, it adds flavour to the chicken, not to add heat. It is accompanied with seasonal vegetables and fries.
As the day turns into night, the dinner ends off with bitter orange sliced cake. The orange flavour was slight bitter with a good chocolate flavour with refreshing fruits by the side.
