Media Tasting at Fragrance Garden
Fragrance Garden started off as a zi char stall before becoming full-fledged restaurant located at Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre. Despite being in a Shopping Centre which seems pretty deserted, Fragrance Garden was pretty crowded probably due to them serving authentic Teochew cuisine in Singapore. From a wide selection of dishes from its menu, there are some popular dishes which definitely stood out.
For starters, I would recommend the Teochew Pork Aspic which seems to be something of an acquired taste. I enjoyed the texture of the tender pork contrasting the gelatinous savoury aspic.
Something much more easily enjoyed by the mainstream would be the Special Combo Roll. Deep fried till crisp, filled with a mixture of minced pork and crab (left) / prawn (right) meat.
Easily a favourite would be the Red Garoupa/Halibut with 3 Flavours Sauce. The chunks of boneless fish slices were rather fresh and fried till crispy, further drenched with their homemade sweet-spicy sauce.
As the Fried Teochew Kway Teow with Chye Por arrived, I could already smell the aroma of wok hei as it drifted towards me. Despite its simple looking appearance it actually tasted really good as the chye por helps to add some saltiness to elevate its taste.
As their menu is pretty extensive, you might also want to try other dishes such as their Signature Flaming Pork that was served in a halved pineapple, Braised Pork with steamed Buns, Aubergine with Vegetables & Abalone and Stuffed Sea Cucumber.
Last but not least, Fragrance Garden does pretty delicious yam paste dessert that was loaded with pumpkin, lotus seeds and crunchy diced water chestnuts. If I wasn’t controlling my diet, I would have wiped out the entire plate clean.
